Emotional Eating – Feeding Your Feelings

 

What is your relationship with food? Are there foods you are obsessed with or are there times that your cravings are out of control? Have you ever considered what you are trying to feed or fulfill emotionally for yourself?

 

Emotional eating is eating for reasons other than hunger. Instead of the physical symptom of hunger initiating the eating, an emotion triggers the eating. Emotional hunger comes on suddenly and physical hunger occurs gradually. Many times I’ve heard clients say, “I eat and I’m not even hungry.”

 

There are many reasons why people feed their emotions with food. In no particular order, some of them are:

 

When I work with clients regarding their emotions and relationship to food, we explore their beliefs about food, how they identify with food and how they value food. We then develop strategies so that they can manage their emotional states. One of the more eloquent things we will do is delve into a particular food “hook” or obsession and unveil its significance. This can be very powerful and frequently life changing. Often , there are immediate shifts and changes that occur after our first coaching session around the meaning of food in their lives. Long-term success almost always involves addressing issues at the levels of beliefs, values and identity.
